As a mouse.

As a mouse, I’m not usually privy to information, or at least any information that I find interesting, or applicable to my life. As a mouse, I spend more time in my roommate’s compost bin than I do contemplating the reasons behind anything, and love for me smells like the peanut butter on the mouse traps she leaves behind the oven.

It was night, or at least, it was dark. My tail ached, which only happens when it’s going to rain. In this city, there’s a constant throb. My mother in law told us not to move here, but bad weather wasn’t enough of a reason to stay put. There are opportunities here. Also, she’s a big pain in my little mouse ass.

Sometimes, I watch her sleep. Not my mother in law, but my new roommate. She is only five feet tall, but to me, she is a snoozing giant. I feel small the way I’m sure she feels small around other humans. I want to talk to her, I want to make us coffee and sit and gossip. She is only aware enough of my presence to lay traps and pour plaster into the door of my living space and be extra vigilant about sealing her food containers. I forgive her for it all, and I long for her friendship. On the rough days, when she cries, I wish I could emerge and comfort her without eliciting further melancholy.

This night, I curled up in the corner of her tiny room. There was another body in the room, for the third night in a row. They lay side by side on the bed, carefully not touching. She had climbed into bed, wearing tiny shorts and a tiny tank top. She slid across the bed and settled as far from the door as possible, facing the window. A few minutes later, he walked in, and stood next to the bed.

“I can sleep on the couch if you want,” he said, hesitantly. “If it helps you sleep better.” A pause; palpable, painful. My heart, already speeding along doubled in it’s rapidness. She spoke “No. Sleep here. You’re over-thinking things again.” A hint of acid in her voice. He matched her pause.

“Just trying to be considerate.”

She snorted.

And there they lay, both now on their backs. He closed his eyes, she kept hers open and stared up through the ceiling. She was carefully watching the International Space Station, or maybe she had picked a point beyond that. She could’ve been staring into another universe, or another life she was to live in the future.

As a mouse, a little creature not privy to information and not subject to acute sadness, I couldn’t have known all there was to know about the situation. I couldn’t have known how she cared for him, how he had come from thousands of miles to see her, and how his sudden doubts had ruined it all. I couldn’t know that she resented his half baked love. I couldn’t know that she wanted nothing more than for him to sleep on the couch, but couldn’t stand the thought of sleeping without him.

But I noticed the smell of unrealized potential. I saw her keep her eyes open and I watched her tear ducts swell slightly. I heard her breathing slow.

Maybe tomorrow I’ll arrange the most colorful carpet fibers I can pluck into the world’s smallest proxy bouquet for her. There’s so little I can do, as a mouse.

Inspiration.

top to bottom: fishtail braids, "A Little Princess", Bassett hound, (young) Michael Caine, Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, Ali Macgraw, Whole Foods coffee cup, (my new) shoes, and finally, Bon Iver (I came around.)

Getting most of my juice from the past at the moment. Old and musty seems familiar and comforting.

Also, I feel a bit lighter. Like I'm missing something?

Rose gets naked.

Two shots from a photo shoot I did for my friend/aspiring photographer Loyvie, a super bohemian, super tight Saudi girl in my post-modern art class.

...the shoot and the sandwiches we ate before were exactly what I needed.

Cooper (aka Coops), age 5

I promised to eat peanut butter and pickles together if the kids tried strawberries in their salad. I think I got the short end of the stick.

I am exhausted (I accidentally quit coffee, cold-turkey) and a bit heartsick. This city is so incredible that you can’t help but feel this impossible sort of love. Sounds dramatic… and it is.

Last night, I was invited to a party at my boss’s girlfriend’s flat out near the University of Greenwich. I took the Northern line to Bank station, and transferred to the DLR (overground tube line).

The line runs through a huge office district outside of the city, glass buildings that are impossibly big. Futuristic. The train runs high above the ground, and the buildings are lit from within, letting you look in as you pass by. It felt like I was in some sort of action movie (Bladerunner 6, starring Rose) and, strangely enough, that tube ride has been one of the highlights of the trip.

On the way back, I overheard a group of friends talking. I guess they were on their way back from a party, at least, they all had that unfocused, tipsy look in their eyes. They were talking about some guy they all knew, and his unhappy marriage, and his apparent confession to one of them that he loved them (shortly before the beginning of his marriage). And the fact that he was a alcoholic. And I felt like I was 8 again, wondering why people have to be unkind to other people.

Today, I drank in the park, because it was sunny, and because you can do that in this wonderful country.

And that is all I have to say.

In West Philadelphia

born & raised

New Rose is finding it a lot easier to see the charming things about my Philly. There's always a full pot of coffee made when I wake up (usually the second or third brewed already). When I grab our old cook books, they fall open to my favorite recipes. There are no sirens, and I can play my music as loud as I'd like without having to worry about up/downstairs neighbors. I have a renewed appreciation for our garbage disposal, and I have a guaranteed running partner (Julie, grudgingly, hasn't said no yet).

Edit: The following conversation just went down-
Mom: Do we have any more powdered sugar? I need a third of a cup.
Julie: Yeah, you're fine.

(insert long pause)

Actually, you might want to throw it out. I found three dead bugs in it last night.

...gimme sympathy

(clears throat loudly)

The 2010 Spring Semester, abridged:

Techno/Rave ensemble: Grew to love my T/R group in a very 80s high school movie sort of way ("Guys... it turns out, we're all the same inside.")(cue cheesy synth pop)

Abnormal Psychology: Talked about the phallic allusion that is Joe Camel. Don't believe it? Professor Eastman has an overhead of Joe Camel, and an overhead of a penis. They line up perfectly. I enjoyed watching someone walk in an hour late and turn around to see some guy's junk magnified on the front wall of the room.

401: Bonded with my favorite synth professor. I held the final class at my apartment- the prof brought a bottle of champagne and we listened to final projects. I wrote my first drum n bass track, and gave several lessons on lyric writing to the class.

Counterpoint: No comment.

History of Western Music: Professor Tom McGah, "Mozart was composing... and by the age of 35, he was decomposing."

339 (Composition and Sound Design for Commercial Production): Closest I've come to feeling like I'm on a reality show. Every week, the sick talented people in this class presented their work and we proceeded to rip each other apart. My ego is firmly in check. Once, Jeff Baust (teacher/guru/complete mystery) laughed at one of my jokes. My general feedback from him? "This is great, but completely not what the producer wanted. So you're fired." Apparently there's a Facebook group for those who have been fired most weeks in 339. Oh, social networking.

Misc: Tattoo. Sangria at Tapeo on multiple occasions. Age split between the youngest and oldest boy I kissed: 11 years. Played my first (and second) show. Discovered the world's best eyeliner (no really, it's noteworthy). Learned Ableton Live... like a new language. Saw Amanda's employer dance drunk on a table. Sang on a dub/reggae cover of a Neil Young song. Sang on a Ke$ha ripoff track. Joined Team Lady Gaga (late, I admit).

Philly on Thursday, then on the London on the 29th.

This is Mary's new tattoo.

This is Amanda's new tattoo.

THIS IS MY NEW TATTOO!

This is my new, shiny controller.

These are (some of) the awesome people who showed up for Teers and Beers (synth community volunteering and drinking).

These are the coolest of the cool synth girls.

Crazy semester, non?

sicky

Last night in the ER I learned that it's possible to get strep, recover, and get it again within two weeks.

On the bright side, the MGH ER staff are starting to remember my name.

Rainy Days and Mondays

My mom just called me to say that, in the storm, the big tree in our backyard fell down, taking out another tree and crushing our neighbor's fence.

If the tree had falled in the opposite direction, it would have crushed our living room, where Julie was taking a nap.

I'm feeling very grateful for a lot things today. Including/especially the people I love (...you guys...)

Also, today I met the man I am going to marry. HA. Boy who cried wolf? More like girl who cried love. Or just cried. Tee hee.
